If you are new to testing, here is what you can expect:
- Be at the rink one hour before your scheduled test time – sometimes, tests run ahead of schedule
- Check your appearance. Hair should be neat. For female skaters, it is best to tie it back or put it up. This helps the judge to assess your posture as well as presents a tidy appearance. Ensure that your skates and laces are clean and tidy. Female skaters should wear a dress or skirt with tights. Male skaters should wear dress pants. Gloves and sweaters may be worn for warm-up, but should be removed for the test.
- Each skater will get time to warm up their test. The order of skate will be determined by the Test Chair.
- While “on test” the skater will be asked to perform specific skills in front of a judge or panel of evaluators in order to assess if he / she is ready to advance to the next level.
- Tests will be observed by the evaluator and rated as “excellent”, “good”, “satisfactory” or “needs improvement”. The skater needs to obtain mostly “satisfactory” or better ratings in order to be successful on the test.
- Once the evaluator has completed his / her evaluation, the results will be given to the skater and his / her coach.
A Guide To Competing:
Some skaters thrive on competition and enjoy entering Figure Skating Competitions. Throughout the season, there are many competitions, held throughout Ontario and beyond, in which your skater may choose to participate. Some are open to our CanSkaters, while others are reserved for our more serious Competitive skaters. If your child has the “competition bug”, we invite you to talk to your Coach or a member of the Club’s Executive about the myriad of possibilities that are open to him / her.
General Information About Competitions:
- Competition opens up a whole new world of figure skating!
- Many competitions are open to CanSkaters and Preliminary skaters
- Most competitions require a CD and a back-up cassette with your skater’s music
- Always double-check your skater’s bag for music, skates, costume, extra laces, extra tights / socks, warm-up jacket or sweater BEFORE you leave for the competition
- Arrive at the competition one hour before their scheduled skate time. Many competitions run ahead of schedule and if you are late, your skater will be disqualified from competition. When you arrive, ensure that you register and check-in your skater’s music (don’t forget to pick it up after the competition)
- Within the category that your skater enters, there will likely be other skaters as well. In order to fairly determine the order of skate, a draw is held by the event organizers. Where there are many skaters competing in the same category, the skaters will be divided into “flights”.
- Each “flight” of skaters will have a pre-determined warm-up period, based on the number of skaters in the flight and the level of complexity of their skate. Each “flight” at that level will receive the same amount of time for warm-up.
- A panel of adjudicators will mark each performance and Skate Canada trained accountants will tabulate and post the results for everyone to view.
- Medals are customarily awarded to the top three skaters in each flight. Some competitions award ribbons to the 4th place finisher.
- Results will be posted some time after the last skater, in the flight, has skated. Medals will be awarded at the next medal presentation. It is incumbent on the skater to be present at the medal presentation, in skates and skating attire; nobody will go searching for you if you are late or absent.
- It is an expectation of the Perth Figure Skating Club that all skaters will be good ambassadors of our Club and will demonstrate good sportsmanship, at all times. Thus, we expect that skaters will be as gracious in winning a competition as they will be in losing a competition.
“The contest lasts for moments,
though the training has taken years.
It wasn’t the winning alone that was worth
the work and tears.
The applause will be forgotten.
The prize will be misplaced.
But the long, hard hours of practice
will never be a waste.
In trying to win you build a skill.
You learn that winning depends on will.
You never grow by how much you win.
You only grow by how much you put in.
So any challenge you have just begun
put forth your best and you have already won.”
